February 2020. Leap year. It felt really cool that a show was happening on the 29th, and that the 29th was falling on a Saturday.
I really got into Boy Harsher a year earlier when they released Careful. It may be the record I’ve listen to most since. I reached out to them a few days before the show to take a few portraits and they were immediately down and super easy to communicate with. The hardest part may have been to find each other in the maze that is Knockdown Center, but we made it work in some sort of green room behind a bar. I have a lot of admiration for what they do and loved how effortlessly cool and down to earth they were.
For these photos I had a Yashica T4 with a roll of Cinestill BwXX in it, and a Ricoh GR1s with Ilford HP5. I wouldn’t be able to tell which photo came from which camera without looking at the negatives, so maybe we can officially assume that none of these things matter.
A lot of my friends aren’t into live music outside of nightclubs and this was my yearly “hey trust me, just come to this one, you’ll get it”. I don’t remember the details of the show besides that it was dark, foggy, and loud. I was thrilled that I got to share this moment with close friends. It’s a party.
We continued the night downstairs at Basement which opened a few months earlier. We didn’t know it would be our last late night out for a while, but I don’t think we would have changed a thing if we did.
Thank you Jae and Gus for your time.
