It seems pretty common for people coming from hardcore music to get into new-wave. I’m not sure how to explain it. I definitely am one of those people, I think there is something romantic about synthesizers, and I happen to dress in black all year (it is both convenient and cool).
Cold Cave is a special band. Its connection to American Nightmare may make it even more special for all the punk kids turned goths. They came to Webster Hall to play Cherish The Light Years in its entirety and a few other favorites. It was nothing short of magical.
They sounded incredible and the light show was beautiful. I thought I knew everything about that record, and yet listening to songs like Icons of Summer or Villains of the Moon live made me feel like I was experiencing it for the first time. The best way to describe that night is that I truly felt great getting out from it. I was on a high for a few days and while I was already listening to Cold Cave a lot, that show made me listen to them a lot more in the weeks that followed it.
I rarely take photos at big venues so I haven’t thought of the 3 songs rule in a while. I brought two cameras for it, Yashica T4 and Ricoh GR1s and rolls of Ilford HP5 pushed to 800 in both. Everything was home-developed a few hours later and scanned in the morning.
And while we’re talking about Cold Cave, Heartworm Reader Vol. 1 is one of my favorite read of the year.
Thank you Wes for having me.
