Turnstile at Elsewhere 8/23/2021

December 29, 2021

All the stars are aligned: arguably one of the best live band there is today, playing a beloved Brooklyn venue the week of their new album release. It wasn’t exactly the first show I’ve been to since things reopened, but it’s the first one I truly anticipated.

Elsewhere isn’t your typical venue for hardcore music, but Turnstile isn’t your typical hardcore band either.

Living in NYC is truly a blessing for anyone into shows, it’s so great it’s easy to become jaded about it. Tonight things are different. The idea of seeing Turnstile after the year we all went through made me feel like I was 10-years old again about to go to the only show I was allowed to attend that year.

There is always something in the air when they play. It’s like everyone attending knows we’re witnessing something special and will immediately lose their mind to be part of it. Energy keeps getting pushed between the band and the crowd, and there isn’t a second without someone stage diving.

Seeing all the deserved excitement around them today makes me feel they may have the same impact on punk music that Slipknot did on metal 20 years ago. It’s different just enough to make it enjoyable by anyone not into the genre yet. If you haven’t checked it out yet, Turnstile Love Connection is the perfect way to see what this is all about.

For these photos I used a Yashica T4 with Ilford HP5, pushed to 1600 and developed with Kodak HC-110. Few photos, overly underexposed, but I didn’t get kicked in the head by anyone jumping from the stage so everything went better than expected.
